Accessory Permits Made Easy

Accessory buildings, structures or uses that are not included in the development permit require a separate development permit application.

  1. What percentage of the lot size can all the accessory buildings be?
    10% only
  2. What percentage of the lot size can the dwelling and all accessory buildings be?
    45% only
  3. Can a separate garage or shop be the same size or larger than the main dwelling?
    No, it must be smaller.
  4. What is the maximum building height of a principal residence?
    10.1m or 33ft 
  5. What is the maximum building height of an accessory building?
    4.9m 16ft

Other Facts:

  • The first accessory building 100ft2 or less placed on a lot, does not require a development permit.  The second or subsequent accessory buildings shall require permits
  • Detached garages shall have a minimum separation of 10’ from the foundation of any dwelling or building, and a minimum of 2’ from the roof overhang of a dwelling or structure.
  • Accessory building eaves shall be no closer than 2’ from the side lot or rear lot property line.
