Candidate Introductions

Deb Hansen

As we are approaching that time when we elect five new counselors for the Village, I, Deb Hansen will be running for a counselor position. I have been a counselor for 6 years and Deputy Mayor for 2 years and am ready if elected to serve another 4-year term. I have enjoyed and welcomed new counselors through my 8 years on Council. I have resided in Barnwell for 48 years, raised my 5 children here and enjoy watching my 14 grandkids live and grow in this family friendly community. I love the hometown feel of this Village where you can be involved and share in the opportunities that it offers. I am a big supporter of Barnwell Days and am currently on the Parks and Recreation committee, Barnwell Library Committee and several other boards. I understand the role that taxes play in helping sustain our infrastructure, but I also strive to keep our taxes low.  I have been involved in budget deliberations over my 8 years and love that our Village has maintained very low taxes with continued growth. My desire is to see that Barnwell remains a good place to live, to volunteer, to support one another, where family life is valued, and where being greeted on the street is the norm. It can’t get much better than living in a place where you know your neighbors, where families thrive and we enjoy the slower pace of small-town living. Surely Barnwell is that “Great Place to Call Home”.

Alexander (Sandy) Watts

Alexander (Sandy) Watts here, and I’m asking for your support to continue serving as Village Councillor. Since being elected in the 2023 by-election, I’ve worked to make Council more transparent, accountable, and focused on long-term planning that reflects our shared values.

Those who know me might say I can be slow to make decisions.  But, as a senior on a fixed income, I see that as a strength. Taking the time to think, to question, and to understand the facts before acting isn’t hesitation — it’s responsibility. When decisions affect families, finances, and the future of our village, they deserve the time it takes to get them right.

Our village is changing. Growth is inevitable – but how we grow is up to us. We need balanced development that provides homes for young families, working residents, and seniors alike. That means smaller, affordable housing options alongside traditional family homes, supported by accessible parks, pathways, and recreation spaces. That Barnwell village feel that we all value isn’t an accident – it is the result of generations of people working together, caring for each other, and casting a hopeful glance to their future: it is our responsibility to maintain it through careful planning and measured growth.

I believe in fiscal responsibility with foresight — spending wisely, not reactively. Controlling taxes matters, but it’s equally important to invest in the infrastructure, research, and services that keep our village sustainable and strong. Penny-wise decisions today can become pound-foolish consequences tomorrow when we fail to plan ahead. This can lead to missed financial opportunities, reduced services and administrative support, or inflated project costs. Smart spending means investing in the infrastructure, planning, and services we truly need — guided by data, not pressure or preference.

Residents deserve clear answers and open, timely communication. I believe Council should explain not just what decisions are made, but why they’re made — and how they serve the entire community. I’ll continue to advocate for fair, well-documented processes and meaningful public engagement and transparency.

I am grateful for the confidence you placed in me at the by-election and I ask you for your support when you vote in this year’s election.

There’s still work to do, but together we can ensure that Barnwell remains a welcoming, well-planned, and financially stable community — one that preserves the village feel that makes Barnwell A Great Place To Call Home.
